Thankful: Day 24

Today I'm thankful for Thanksgiving!

For Family and Friends. For the YUMMY Delicious FOOD, and for what it means--we get together to express our thanks for everything!

I have to be honest, some years all these thankful posts from people drive me a little crazy. But this year, I decided to do it in part because I needed the reminder of all the things I have to be thankful for. There's nothing like counting your blessings to get out of a slump!

I loved thanksgiving growing up--the ones I remember most are the ones at Grandma Nelson's house or the Mackay's house. We always got three candy corns and got to go around the room saying the three things we were thankful for. Grandma Nelson always had the best lines, I laugh every time I think of her "thankfuls". And remember "Bingo" nights with cousins afterward? And all our fun crafts!?!? How bout that year where we crammed our family of 9 in the pulsar. I was a wee thing, but I still remember sitting up on the dashboard in the front. Was that the same year we showed up with wax lips at the door?

More recently I've spent thanksgiving away from family. Which, to be quite honest, is hard for me. I love our traditional fare, and our traditions, and just...the way we do it. But it has been fun to see the different ways we can celebrate. One year in DC I went to the Seays house, and I still remember how much that meant to me--to find a home in the big city where I could feel the spirit of thanksgiving again! The year I started dating Seth he let me come to his home, and I was so grateful to feel so included and a part of things that first year, and it was fun to see some of the traditions they have that are now a part of our family, too! And two years ago, when I was battling my second round of mastitis and bailed on helping with turkey day prep, our friends still let us come at the last minute to the Chez Seguine Thanksgiving I, which was one of my most thankful thanksgivings yet! And who will ever forget Seth's MSG free Green Bean Soup Casserole!?!?!

Thankful for memories, thankful for thanksgiving!!! (Okay, and thankful for FOOD! I am SO excited to go eat!!!)

Thankful: Day 23

Today I'm thankful for The Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Living without the Gospel is hard to imagine. It's the very foundation of who I am. Often when I'm singing primary songs to Ryan I get teary, thinking that I'm pretty lucky that I was raised with the simplest and most profound knowledge as a part of my earliest years on up.

The bottom line, for me, is that Christ Lives. He loves us. He guides us. And, most importantly, he atoned for our sins and through that can carry our burdens when we rely on Him. And guess what? After I put that into perspective, some of those other "things" seem to just fall into place.

So I'm thankful for the knowledge of the Gospel, and for my Savior.

Update: I did NOT mean for my post to sound so critical or negative about the church...don't worry, I'm still in full fellowship and participation! :) I corrected it to try and sound less negative...sorry!

Thankful: Day 22

This thankful month would not be complete without the following:

I am thankful for clothes.

Since that is what more of our discretionary money goes toward than anything else (sorry Seth) I have to express my gratitude.

Confession: I finally stopped buying by size and started buying what fits. Guess what? It's AMAZING!!! I really used to only look at a certain size and if it was a little snug I convinced myself that I was just bloated or something. And you know what? Properly fitting clothes are amazing.

I've really been *trying* to get versatile pieces that are both fashion-savvy and mom-friendly. And especially with this pregnancy, I've been trying to get non-maternity clothes that I can wear for a few months after the pregnancy, too. Because we all know that the post-baby weight takes a m̶i̶n̶u̶t̶e̶ marathon to get off, and no one likes to REALLY be in maternity clothes for that time.

It's kind of fun to see what I can get away with fashion-wise. I probably make most people gag with some of my combinations and colors lately, but it's all about that creative outlet, and heaven knows I need it! :)

Thankful: Day 21

Today I'm thankful for Snuggling.

I am less of a snuggler than I used to be, but I still love it all the same! Ryan started asking to "Sun gul" all the time, and I think it's too cute.

There's nothing better at the end of a long day than a good snuggle from someone you love :)

Tidbit of the day

Thank you, CJane!

There are only three things you should ever say to a pregnant woman:

1. You look great!

2. Would you like to sit down?

3. Can I get you a cookie?

#2 is debatable. I would stick with 1 or 3.

Thankful: Day 20

Today I'm thankful for a place to live.

Sigh. Sometimes we have to be grateful that we have something, even if it isn't our ideal. I would do a lot for a washer/dryer and dishwasher and a yard and non-smoking neighbors and a back door and central heat/air conditioning. But, I am grateful that we have a roof over our heads, and that we have a lot more space than most people in LA, and that we have two bedrooms (though you'd wonder if Ryan knew that most nights...), and that we live in a relatively safe neighborhood, and that we have lots and lots of neighbors that are nice. Oh, and I have a kitchen that's twice the size of our last one! (Ha, shoulda seen the last one).

I REALLY believe that the most important thing about a home is who lives in it, and so for that I am SUPER grateful. Seth is the nicest roommate, he's the best I've ever had (and he had some stiff competition!). And even though Ryan doesn't pick up after himself and makes me do all his dishes, I still think he's a pretty great guy to have in the house!

Thankful: Day 19

Today I'm thankful for Turkey.

Because my friend Heather has the most delicious recipe in the world for it! Seriously, we have never had a better turkey than this one. If you're looking for a good Turkey recipe, here it is people! And you can thank Heather Seguine later. Because she deserves a whole lot of thanks for changing our lives with this one.

Lemon Herb Turkey

Ingredients:
16-20 lb. turkey
1 medium lemon
12 branches each fresh basil, parsley, thyme, and marjoram
6 large cloves garlic, split
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil or butter
Black pepper
Salt

A day ahead, place bird in roasting pan and rub inside and out with one lemon half, then with herbs and garlic. Slice other lemon half. Tuck inside cavity along with half the garlic and herbs. Mince together leaves from remaining herbs and garlic, blending with the olive oil or butter. Slip the mixture under the turkey's skin all over breast areas, thigh, leg, and back if possible. Sprinkle turkey with pepper. Lightly and refrigerate overnight.

The next day, heat the oven to 325 degrees. Sprinkle bird with salt. Lightly flour roasting bag and place turkey inside. Roast breast side down in roasting pan 15 to 18 minutes per pound, or until an instant-read thermometer tucked into the thickest part of the thigh reads 175 degrees.

During the last 30 minutes, snip corner from bag and pour drippings into saucepan for gravy. Remove bird from bag, turn breast side up, and sprinkle with olive oil. Place back in oven uncovered to brown breast area. Rest 10 minutes in a warm place before carving.

Thankful: Day 18

Today I'm thankful for Christmas.

I have been so excited about getting together our Christmas decorations! We never have really decorated our home for Christmas, but since we have a family now, and since I think there's a possibility that I'll be bed-resting it up for the holidays, I have wanted to get our family Christmas decorations in order!

Last week I asked Seth what "Christmas Color Scheme" we should go with, and he looked at me like I was crazy. Because, you know, are we going to go with a burgandy and forest green, or are we sticking with a pea green and bright red with turquoise accents, just to modernize it? Or should we do a multi-green-and-red-all-over look? Or, should we stick with silver and gold and just do some accents of color?? The possibilities are endless!

Mostly I'm just excited because Christmas says to me a few words: Believe. Give. Receive (the light of Christ, the Christmas spirit, the blessings that God is waiting to give us...). Love. Family. And who doesn't want to remember all those things every time you smell pine trees and cinnamon and peppermint and cloves?

AND, luckily Burbank likes to celebrate their Christmas-y things starting TONIGHT! I'm so excited to go to their festival and get in the Christmas spirit! I bought our tree yesterday and started Christmas Shopping yesterday, too! I just love the spirit of Christmas!

Thankful: Day 17

Today I'm thankful for Rainbows.

In high school, I was obsessed with Rainbows. And while I, um, have cooled that obsession, I still LOVE seeing a good rainbow. The first time Rainbows became significant to me was after I found out that Steve died, when we were driving home from his gravesite. There was the most beautiful double rainbow ahead of us on the road. It was such a significant thing to me--a rainbow that symbolized hope, peace, and forgiveness sent straight from heaven. Little did I know that would be something I would need to remember over and over and over and over...and luckily, there are lots of rainbows to help me remember! Every time, every SINGLE time, I recommit to a fresh start, a new beginning.

So...that's kind of a random thing to be thankful for, but I'm thankful that we always have little symbols in our lives to remind us of the course we are trying to stay on :)

Thankful PS

TONIGHT, I am thankful that Ryan fell asleep before 8 PM. Halleluiah!

It's a good thing, or that whole sugar-free thing would have gone out the window by 8:30...

Thankful: Day 16

Today I'm thankful for Fresh Fruit.

Is there anything better than a ripe, juicy, fresh peach? Or a pear, with just the right amount of crunch? How bout delicious fresh picked raspberries and cream? Or Strawberries, bright red and juicy? Mmmm, Apples dipped in almond butter, Frozen Grapes on a hot summer day, a banana right before a run, clementine oranges all winter long, a grapefruit for breakfast? YUMMY.

I love fresh fruit today, and am filling my head with thoughts of fruit instead of gingersnaps and chocolate chip cheesecake bars and triple chocolate mousse with brownies and lemon sugar cookies and s'mores and chocolate waffles with fudge and ice cream and pinkberry....

Because those first two weeks after going sugar-free again are BRU-TAL.

Thankful: Day 15

Today I'm thankful for parents.

After another FUN Disneyland day, I called my parents on the commute home and chatted with them. We'd had a busy few days and hadn't been able to catch up properly, and what a refreshing and GREAT chat we had.

I'm so thankful for a dad who is a great example of faith, who cares and loves each of us, is a source of knowledge on so many things, and who always has the latest scoop on technology! (Seth LOVES that part!) I'm so thankful for a mother who loves us so much, who cares about the smallest and largest and everything else in between things that we're dealing with--and is so good at finding a way to help! I REALLY appreciate the attention to detail that Mom has, it means she has a gauge on how we're feeling pretty much all the time, and she always seems to know just the right way to help us along. Or be a listening ear. Or just care.

I'm so thankful, so blessed, so lucky. Thank you, parentals!

Thankful: Day 14

Today I'm thankful for the small answers to prayer, and the mercy of God when we don't necessarily heed promptings.

Long story, but in October I kept feeling like I NEEDED to get Ryan health insurance (remember the friend post about not judging? So if you're a friend don't judge us for that one...it's another long story). I kept thinking about it, and then NEVER did anything about it.

So yesterday it came to our attention that we needed to take Ryan in to the doctor for something (small, thanks to answers to prayers). And we started looking up healthcare stuff, and found out that the month for open enrollment for kids is the month that they were born, OR you have to pay a higher rate PLUS 20% surcharge for 12 months. Oops. Head Smack. SERIOUSLY? I was SO sad that I hadn't listened to the prompting I had in October to get him insurance. SO SAD. Cried for awhile about it.

But you know what? I called a random pediatrician this morning, and we went in, and it was not nearly as expensive as I thought, plus I LOVED HIM! (and if you know how I feel about most pediatricians, this is huge!) And we found a few affordable plans (even with the surcharge), so phew!

And just to keep things real, I am praying really hard that we'll figure out a new solution to the next healthcare crisis (getting insurance for Seth and BGJ (baby girl johnson)).

Thankful: Day 13

Today I'm thankful for Sisters.

For the midnight phone calls I make to Nurse Amy to find out what I should do with our latest health emergency/panic. For the validating texts and emails from Carol right when I need them--and the perfect understanding to so many of life's frustrations. For the thoughtful and validating "guide to pregnancy" from Jen the second she found out I was pregnant for the first time. For the bawl-my-eyes-out and just need to talk to someone about it phone call to Heather. And for the Seriously-I-love-that-we can't keep any phone conversation under an hour talk-about-anything-under-the-moon Mary calls (not to mention the endless laughs from anything that girl writes--if you're not her friend on FB and don't read her blog you seriously are missing out on some of the best humor ever.

Just some of my favorites. So many things to love. Did I mention I can text anyone for recipe help and I get almost instantaneous responses? (PLUS, Recipes from here and here that are pretty much the bees knees)

I love you, sisters!

Thankful: Day 12

Today I'm thankful for Cars.

I had a good year-and-a-bit without a car during the day. It was torturous some days. It was a blessing in others (Walking 4+ miles a day? Yes!) But all in all, I'm SO thankful for a car. It has given Ryan and I the freedom we need to get where we need/want practically anytime!

Friday, November 11, 2011

Thankful: Day 11

Today I'm thankful for friends.

The ones that just know you. The Text Message, the Email, the drop by, at the perfect time. The validation when you need it, the gentle reminder when you need it. No judging, even when they know you're looney. The insta-forgiveness. The automatic understanding. The ones who, even with years of absence, pick up right where you left off :)

Thank you, friends.

Thankful: Day 10

Today I'm thankful for Disneyland.

Ryan and I took the day to go today, and I'm just grateful for the distraction, the entertainment, and the general happy atmosphere. After getting season passes, I was worried we'd only be able to go a few times, since Ryan doesn't like a stroller, and me carrying him everywhere is becoming increasingly difficult (and letting him run free tends to be dangerous). This was our best trip yet! Ryan was a little sad that "Mermaid Ride" was closed, but we ventured out to find the "Monsters Ride" and it solved everything! Not to mention, when we're there on off season we can just ride around and around and around. SO easy.

I also thought I'd note that I had my first EVER corndog today, at the Disneyland Corndog Stand. The cornbread dip stuff was great (albeit heart-attack inducing) and the hotdog was gross, as most hotdogs are. Ryan had a Caprese Sandwich and some apple slices. I think we'll see if he can wait till he's 28 for his first corndog :)

Thankful: Day 9

Today I'm thankful for Chocolate.

Some days you just need a little chocolate to make things better :)

Tuesday, November 08, 2011

Thankful: Day 8

Today I'm thankful for Acupuncture.

I got quite a few emails from people after I mentioned that I've been getting acupunture, asking about it. And probably several more eye rolls from the non-believers out there. And maybe a few dry heaves from the needle haters. Who knows.

But you know what? It is such a relaxing/energizing, balancing, mind-changing experience. Today I got Acupuncture for pregnancy migraines, barfing (still), and I think she threw in a few mind calming needles. I literally felt the negative energy dissipating during my session, and couldn't believe how much better I felt afterward.

I really think Acupuncture has been an answer to prayer, along with my midwife/acupuncturist/nurse practitioner/chinese medicine doctor guru (yep, one person!). I have been so worried about having chronic mastitis again, and she assures me that we'll be able to do quite a bit about it this go-around, despite the issues that are already arising. SO thankful for that reassurance.

Thankful: Day 7

Today I'm grateful for little baby Girl Johnson.

I had my 24 week appointment today, checked in on the little one, and got some stern lectures from the midwife (sigh. another day, another post).

For whatever reason, I've just felt very strongly that I need to get all prepared for little baby Johnson. Quilt tops are almost finished, and today I just felt like I needed to make my list and get all our supplies for baby in order. I don't think she's coming early. (In fact, I think she's going to be a latecomer.) I just think she's special. I want so badly to bond with her now, to get to know this little spirit that I think has been waiting awhile to come. I know I'm an emotional pregnant lady but I sure do feel like there's something different about what's coming. It probably doesn't make much sense, because it doesn't even to me, but I'm grateful that I'll have the chance to be a mama x2. :)

Sunday, November 06, 2011

Thankful: Day 6

Today I'm thankful for the crockpot.

How nice is it to do a little prep work in the morning, do whatever you're going to do all day, and have a piping hot meal at the end of the day?

Saturday, November 05, 2011

Thankful: Day 5

Today I'm thankful for computers.

Mostly because I don't have one right now!

Our internet isn't working on our TV computer (I know, fancy, right?? Thanks to dear Seth for that one!) and our other computer is in the shop. For days. So thankful posts are going to be delayed.

But really, I love having computers to help us navigate this world. It's so convenient to find all the facts and answers to our questions, not to mention stay in touch and get great ideas (FB, Email, Pinterest)

Friday, November 04, 2011

Thankful: Day 4

Today I'm thankful for cute baby clothes.

Because, as it turns out, not all of them are cute.

I'm just going to throw it out there--I thought baby boy clothes were hard to find, but I think baby girl clothes are WAY harder. I mean, sure, it's difficult to find non-penguin, non-truck, or non-monkey "handsome dude" boy clothes. But I'll take that over searching through "sassy-princess-cutie-angel-cupcake-munchkin" hot pink/black/leopard print chaz any day! I'd like for my little one to stay innocent, sweet, and free-from-the-world's-slogans for at least a few years, please :)

Thursday, November 03, 2011

Thankful: Day 3

Today I am thankful for Ryan.

I could go on and on and on. He's my little buddy. I can't fathom a world without my sweet and sometimes wacky son. He's learning so much about the world, and so fast!

This is his halloween costume this year--buzz lightyear PJs and some blow-up wings! I'm pretty glad it came together, it was a bit of a rush last-minute thing. But is there anything cuter than little Ryan saying all night with his fist up in the air "Buzz Flyin'! Buzz Flyin'!"? :)

Wednesday, November 02, 2011

Thankful: Day 2

Today I'm thankful for running.

Running changed my life.

Its a great micro and macro goal setting program. It is motivating. It keeps me active and healthier. It keeps all those crazy hormones at bay. It provides time to process life. AND, it is a great baby-weight-loss program, wahoo.

So, it turns out that I can't run anymore this pregnancy. I kept running against doctor's orders, and then my body told me that I couldn't do that anymore. So I stopped, and it kind of sent me into a l̶i̶t̶t̶l̶e̶ m̶i̶n̶o̶r̶ m̶e̶d̶i̶u̶m̶ major tailspin. I'm hoping getting out and walking while still listening to my running soundtrack will help in the mornings. And you better believe as soon as baby is out I'll be back on the road. Teton Dam Half Marathon, anyone??

Tuesday, November 01, 2011

Thankful: Day 1

Today I am thankful for Seth.

Lots of reasons to be thankful, but particularly today I'm grateful for his insight and wisdom. He's one of those people who truly cares and finds a way to make things better. It's because of him that I have so much more to be thankful for!

Gingerbread with Lemon Sauce

Over conference weekend, we ate far too many treats, and it was SO worth it!

I just wanted to share my favorite fall recipe, an old family favorite. I have so many great memories of Mom making this and us all eating it!

Gingerbread

1 Egg
3/4 Cup brown sugar
3/4 cup oil
1/2 cup molasses
1 cup boiling water
2.5 cups flour (I use 1/2 whole wheat, 1/2 spelt)
1 1/2 tsp soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp cloves

Mix in order (sift dry ingredients together first). Bake in a 9x9x2 pan at 350 for 30 minutes. Serve with whipped cream and lemon sauce. (We served it with Lemon Ginger Ice Cream from TJs. It was divine!)

Lemon Sauce

2 tbsp corn starch
1 cup sugar
1 tsp lemon rind
3 tbsp lemon juice
2 cups boiling water
pinch salt
dash nutmeg
3 tbsp butter

Mix cornstarch, sugar, and grated lemon rind. Add boiling water and bring to a boil stirring constantly. Boil 5 minutes. Remove from heat and add butter and lemon juice, sprinkle with nutmeg and salt.

In other news...

The past few months have been busy with:

--Visits from Family and Friends, trips to Idaho/Utah for my 10 year high school reunion, Seth's cousin's wedding, and family together time. I have a feeling that I might not get around to documenting on the blog, so we'll just say that I LOVE my family, I LOVED the 10 year reunion, I'm glad we got to fly instead of drive on said vacation, and Seth is my ROCK.

--I have been getting Acupuncture. It is awesome. I need it more, but my checkbook can't afford it.

--My mind is continually going back and forth between wanting to make delicious sinfully unhealthy YUMMY looking desserts and making yummy healthy desserts or other healthy choices. Pinterest has made this flip-flopping even worse. I swear I probably look like a crazy woman with my dichotomy of posts. For now, I'll just call it "balance". Ha.

--Luckily, my newfound obsession with chocolatecoveredkatie.com and http://naturallysweetrecipes.blogspot.com/ have helped me combine delicious with healthy.

--I have been extremely emotional recently. Some obvious reasons, but it is a little out of control. I cried at the DMV the other day. And at the grocery store when a man was SO nice to Ryan when he was being a pill. And...well, you name it, I cried there.

--Ryan frequently comes up, gives me a big hug when I'm crying, and then says "Mama all done sad! All done sad!" and pulls a funny face to make me laugh. It's almost as cute as when he tries to drag me off the couch and says "Mama all done sick! Go outside! Go go go!". He also seriously breaks into hysterical laughter and snort laughs when I throw up in the toilet. He seriously can't stop laughing and will chortle for a good 5 minutes afterward.

--Ryan's vocabulary is hilarious. Obviously he watches a lot of pixar, as most vocab centers around it. I am not ashamed...his imagination is so vivid and he LOVES playing pretend with all his Toy Story and Cars and Thomas toys.

--Tonight we had banana "milkshakes" for FHE, and when we were tucking Ryan in for bed instead of asking for his typical "Milk" he requested "More milkshake pease!". Um, not so much buddy.

--Speaking of Buddy, Ryan has taken to calling people his buddy. "Dada Buddy" "Ryan Buddy" "Mama Budy" "Buzz Buddy." It's adorable.

--The BEST part of pregnancy for me: The hair on my legs virtually disappears, and is hardly visible on my arms. As in, I only have to shave once every two weeks or so...if that. I'm talking smooth as silk legs, guys. It's pretty awesome.

--My love for Trader Joes has waned. We're not breaking up, we're just fighting.

--Meanwhile, my love for Luna Bars has skyrocketed. S'mores is my favorite. Then Chocolate Covered Coconut. Then Chocolate Peppermint Stick.

--I deep cleaned the house today, and it felt so good! AND, it looks good now, yay!

--I was having a particularly hard and sad day, so I packed Ryan up and we went to the temple. The new visitors center is GREAT, and I was so lucky to have a sister missionary who took us in one of the rooms so Ryan could watch church mormon messages. After breaking down crying during one of them, this cute missionary pulled out this video for me:

She said so many things I needed to hear, and between her message (and listening to me cry) and talking to my mom on the way too and from the temple, I survived! Plus, thanks to this message, I have been working on my fall crafts and finding myself in creating.

Stay tuned!

Geta-stay!

In a series of unfortunate (or fortunate) events, it was decided a few weeks ago that Seth would fly to Utah this past weekend for his former college roommate's wedding. I figured it was time for me to be a grown up and hold down the fort with Seth gone for 72 hours (ok, even less...).

On Thursday night, I panicked. I was getting SUPER sick, and the buildup of the past few weeks of stresses in our lives were all hitting me all at once. PLUS, we've been planning for months for a way to me have a getaway weekend, and I KNEW it was time to take it...I really needed a break from the real world--fast, and this was the farthest thing from "getting away from" the real world...it was exactly NOT what I would be able to handle!!!

I really wanted Seth to call it all off, and he WILLING said he would, and tried to several times, BUT, between the ticket and other travel arrangements, I felt TERRIBLY selfish and TERRIBLY embarrassed to make Seth cancel all his plans in order for me to "Survive" a mere 2.5 days without him.

So what did we do? In a brilliant stroke of genius/luck, I thought up a plan. Seth could just take Ryan WITH him! And...so he did.

Oh my goodness, did they have a BLAST or what?!?!? I drove them to the airport, bawling like a baby the whole way. I packed some special treats for Ryan and gave him some mini Woody and Jessie Toy story figurines. He was super excited about Woody and Jessie, but even MORE excited to fly. "Airplane! Airplane! Airplane! Buzz, Woody, Jessie, Ryan, Flyin! Dada Ryan Flyin! Go Go Go Grama Papa" was all we heard the entire drive! And, apparently, that's what everyone on the plane heard as well:

He was super sweet to me in my meltdowns, coming down from his excited high to say "Wuv U Mama!" before picking up his "Airplane! Dada! [tr]hip! Airplane!" Chant again. And all weekend I got precious photo evidence of the FUN Ryan and Dada had.

**Ryan likes the ladies!**

Ryan even got to go play with "Grama and Papa" for several hours while Seth was at the wedding. The only time he had a problem was when I called to check on him...I swear I didn't do it for the validation that he actually loved me or missed me or something ;)

So what did I do all weekend? Well, for the first 24 hours I barfed and barfed and barfed and came down with the absolute WORST (and that's saying something!) migraine and congestion I've ever had. I went and got a prenatal massage (yup! Due on Leap Day 2012), hoping that it would help it calm down...and it did, for about 10 minutes, and then hit me with full force! Nice neighbors, a blessing, and a desperate Tylenol taking (ahhhh, I cringe!) later, I was able to sleep and the migraine went away eventually. Phew!

Despite being terribly congested I knew I needed to take full advantage of my Stay-cation, so away I went! Emily and I went to brunch and prenatal yoga, and after resting a few hours, I went with Krysta down to explore the wonders that they call Chinatown in downtown LA. We finally found what we were looking for (at a steal!) and then I forged my way deeper into downtown to explore the Macy's on Fig & 7th. Seriously, this is a big deal for me. In fact, all weekend I kept thinking in the car "3 years of living here and I still am in shock that I battle Los Angeles Big City traffic, crowds, weirdos, and general craziness on a daily basis." I guess this lil gal from Sugar City still finds the "perilous big city" to be quite the big deal.

After finding the very cutest shoes and jeans to spend my generous gift card from MIL on, I went on my way and enjoyed an evening putting my house back together (cough, dishes!) before Seth and Ryan returned.

Sacrament Meeting was a welcome and spiritual change for me! With Seth normally on the stand, the only break I typically get is when Ryan "desperately runs up to the stand for Seth to save him" (aka, I tell Ryan to go have Dada draw him a picture for a few minutes so I don't lose my mind). This week, I remembered that in Sacrament Meeting we normally sing hymns, listen to talks, and generally feel the spirit! It was especially beautiful being able to pay full attention today on the 10 year memorial of 9/11. We sang "America, the Beautiful" for the intermediary hymn, and the third verse touched me so much.

"Oh, beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved,
And mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine,
Till all success be nobleness,
And every gain divine."

I was so touched at those words. My mind went back to those events, and then quickly forward to the brave men and women who sacrifice so much still today because of the events on 9/11. My Brother-in-law Wade, who has served two year-long foreign tours away from his family in the Air Force--a sacrifice the whole family has made. Sean, one of my dearest friends, who is currently on tour in Afghanistan and had to leave his lovely wife and equally dear friend Tina home. Remi, dear friend Remi, who left her newlywed husband and family to serve a tour, also in Afghanistan. And of course, remembering those lives lost on 9/11, particularly Brady, and the sacrifices both Liz and Brady's family and friends have also made.

Fast forward a few hours and a few headaches and my boys are almost home! Seth always comments when I'm out of town with Ryan how LITTLE time there really is to get things done and tackle any to-do's, and I have to agree! I am excited to have them back, though. This is the longest x15 I have been away from Ryan, and I can't wait for one of his FAMOUS Koala Bear Hugs, and for a few smooches from his Papa ;)

My Latest Project...

I'm so excited to share my latest project!! I started making jewelry and hairpins. It's been so fun to have a project, something to look forward to, figure out, and spend my evenings and naptime hours on!

Ironically, I spend more time trying to figure out how to photograph the things I make...something that I'm not very good at, but thanks to Carol for sending me her extra lighting equipment from her latest project, and very helpful and useful photography friends that have great tips and ideas and knowledge and wisdom to share, I survived the bulk of the learning curve. :)

Special thanks to Heather, who designed my header and button and avatar. Thanks Donker!

Oh, and next week I am SO excited to post my newest earrings, Mini Cameos! I've been anxiously waiting for the supplies to finish arriving so that I can make and photograph them. They are my favorite earrings ever, and I'm excited to share them with my shop customers!

So if you have a chance, and are interested, head on over and let me know what you think!

UPDATE: Since everyone is dying to know, I named the company RyanAmelia because when we were pregnant with Ryan, before we knew he was a boy, my coworkers would call him RyanAmelia. The name kind of stuck, even after we found out Ryan was a boy, and I think it has a nice ring to it, right??

Fourth of July!

The three of us were so excited at the last minute chance to get out of town for the 4th! We drove down to Newport Beach yesterday, grabbed some Cafe Rio on our way down, and checked in at a hotel across the street from the back bay. After an afternoon at the pool and a nice rest, we went to dinner at True Food Kitchen. Oh my goodness, it changed my life. I was SO excited to try EVERYTHING. Indulge me for a minute....it was AMAZING! Their Hummus...incredible. They chop up jalapenos really really small in it, and somehow it makes it burst with flavor without being spicy. Ryan loved it. Mmmm, and the spaghetti squash casserole? Divine. And the Summer salad?? YUM. Best dressing ever. We even splurged and got the Almond Olive Oil Cake with greek yogurt and blackberries, and I have to say I L.O.V.E.D. it. Mmmmm. Yum. Can't wait to go back, next time we're getting the pizza!

After dinner we went back to the hotel, got ready and strolled up the hill to the golf course to watch the fireworks! We prepared Ryan a lot beforehand, telling him that the fireworks go "boom boom boom!" (While we made the popcorn popping action) so Ryan kept walking around going "boo! Boo! Boo!" and was SO excited for whatever was coming. He was so happy to not be going to bed, he was such a ham.

Couldn't get him to hold still!!

Giving papa "Eskimo" kisses.

We were just far enough away from the fireworks that they weren't too loud, and Ryan thought they were awesome. He kept his hands like this the whole time, and when the fireworks would die down, he'd sign "more more more."

You know, it was kind of one of those nights where everything just is perfect. I had imagined watching the fireworks this year over the ocean, and kept holding on to the idea that it might somehow happen. So many different things could have prevented it, but it was one of those moments where things just...work. I am so happy I got to spend the holiday with the family I have, at just the right place doing just the right thing! :) Look at that happy (tired) family!

And, in full disclosure...the rest of the night was less than completely ideal. We were laughing this morning when we were driving back that we should have taken more pictures in general, and more with the camera (instead of camera phone), so that we could remember the perfect evening instead of from 10pm-6am, where the family of three tried unsuccessfully to share a kind size bed :) I had a killer headache, so Seth took care of Ryan a lot of the night, and was so great to help out. The good news is that Ryan went down early to bed, and we'll hopefully be able to do the same!

She's just not that into you...

...but that's not going to get him down!

We had a fun-filled day today at Travel Town with Heather & co today! Heather snapped some adorable photos that I just had to share!

Look at that little hobo. (Perfect description, Mom!)

Ryan loves his "choo-choos" and the conductor with a "hat! hat! hat!" on, and especially being able to run around in wide open spaces with lots of rocks and "trees!" everywhere. (I have to put the exclamation points after his words because he raises his eyebrows and his eyes get all big when he looks at me to tell me about all the things he sees...it's freakin'adorable.)

He looks slightly anxious about his upcoming train ride, but don't be fooled, he loved all that Travel Town had to offer!

Reflective

Tonight Ryan was a little too excited for bedtime, and was acting way too cute for me to let him cry, so I told him that if he stayed on the big boy bed for a few minutes, I would set up the couch into a bed and he and I could watch "Up" while he finished his milk from his sippy cup. He was so excited about it, and kept yelling "Mama. UP!" the whole time I was setting it up in the other room. I went to get him, brought him out on the couch, and we started our show.

Ryan was acting like a complete HAM. Jumping up and down with excitement when the balloons came up to lift the house, putting on his "explorer" hat (AKA a green rubbermaid container!) on and off, making me try on his "hat" again and again, and going into fits of giggles whenever I did. Needless to say, it wasn't exactly the most reverent and effective way of calming him down for bed, but it was too cute to put a stop to.

I finally gave him one more chance to settle down, and he came over and laid his head on my shoulder, sipping on his sippy cup, and turning to look me in the eyes and comment on the show every few minutes. And, of course, that's when all the nostalgia started creeping in, along with mama tears (shocker).

18 months. It's hard to believe it's been a year and a half. Probably today is slightly nostalgic anyway, since it's the first day since he was born that he hasn't nursed (I know, I know... Yeah, I know.) It's a new phase of life! And let me just tell you, 18 months ago I wouldn't have ever guessed we'd just be moving to this phase!

Today at the park there was a little boy with blonde hair who was about 4, playing with a tennis ball. Ryan sat and watched him for a good 15 minutes, intrigued. He finally got up the nerve to walk up to him, saying "ba! ba! ba! (ball)". The little kid was SO nice, and played catch with him for a bit, and then started throwing the ball and letting Ryan chase after it and bring it back to him. It was like watching a little Ryan play with a Big Ryan. It made me excited to see how our little guy grows up, and it made me hope that he will be as nice as "big Ryan" was to him.

And then I look at "little" Ryan's papa, Seth. And I have that exact same hope--that little Ryan can grow up to be like his papa. A few weeks ago a statue that was REALLY sentimental to me over the years got broken, and I told Seth how sad I was about it. Seth went out the next day, figured out what statue it was (based on VERY limited clues), realizing I wouldn't want a replacement, but still wanted to do something for me. He found a charm bracelet with a picture of the statue on it and bought it for me. It was the smallest thing, but I can't tell you how much it meant to me, on so many levels. I realize I'm not always as thankful as I should be for the man standing next to me for eternity. Moments like that help me keep that in mind. (Also, moments like this morning when I ask Seth to delay going into work so I can go running since the running stroller is broken, and he selflessly lets me, help, too!) I'm humbled and thankful and blessed.

I know this won't be the last of the nights of nostalgia and reflective moods. I think for that I'm most grateful. Keep 'em coming, world. You know I'll never run out of tears for nights like tonight ;)

A day of Miracles + Out with the Old

Yesterday was such a wonderful day--I received word of so many GREAT things happening for people around me, and felt my faith renewed in so many ways! I'll post more about them soon, but I just have to express my gratitude at the hand of God in things small and big.

Also, on an unrelated note, I finally decided to retire my running shoes, and for Mother's Day, Seth got me a new pair.

And by a new pair, I mean I convinced him since both pairs were on sale, and the total price equaled the original price of one, that I could get both--one for speed work and technique training, the other for regular/long runs.

Can you guess the old pair? Ha. Unbelievable how dirty a shoe gets.

I took the middle (orange) pair out for their inaugural run this morning, and I think they need to be named something that relates to speed--fastest 2 mile run yet!!! (No, I won't tell you how slow that is, sheesh!)

Also, Amy, you'll be happy to know that the guy at the store coached me in "Beginning chi running" since apparently my general technique is HORRIBLE. :)

Happy Mother's Day!

Thinking tonight about all the women in my life that have made such a difference. Moms, sisters, cousins, roommates, friends, teachers. I count myself lucky!

And Mom, you're the best! I'll bring your real present when I see you, but if I could bring these on a plane I'd bring them all!

This is how we roll...

So, remember how all my other races I go on and on about the catharsis of running? Well, it seems I've changed my tune for this race! This was all FUN, FUN, FUN!

Back in January Elizabeth got us all excited to run a trail race with her, and then followed through and actually got us to sign up! Best decision ever. This was so hilarious/funny and awesome to run. Who can get tired when there's gummy bears on a trail with laugh out loud funny friends around?

Oh, Yeah. We totally planned our outfits and were matchy matchy stripes and shorts friends. We sang through the canyons and let Malibu know that we meant business. And by business, I mean, that we are serious...oh i mean Seriously awesome runners.

If you don't believe me, you better watch this video. Elizabeth put it together, and it is awesome. If my bumpy video skills don't induce nausea, perhaps our vocal renditions of Bon Jovi will.

Disclaimer: The clips may or may not have been taken out of context. Don't believe everything you see on reality TV, people!

Side Note: Did you SEE that king snake on the trail? Because let me tell you, when I nearly ran over that dead King Snake on the trail and instead jumped a good 5 feet in the air, SHRIEKING at the top of my lungs, i might have thrown up a little in my mouth. And had a panic attack. And had vivid recollections of my Ricks College preschool teachers making me carry the boa constrictor to the other class while I broke out in a cold sweat. If it weren't for friends, I really might not have made it through the next 47 steps it took me to pull it together. Phew. What are friends for? :)

Ryan was REALLY excited to see me at the 1/2 way point, and subsequently REALLY mad I left. Then he was REALLY excited to see me at the finish line, and then REALLY mad that I stunk so bad. I tried to bring him across the finish line with me on my back, but he couldn't handle sweaty Mama and opted for a cleaner fresher scented Dada.

Our supportive audience got to have both the mountains and the beach to add to their entertainment during the time we were running. After they met us at the half-way point to watch us run for the porta-potties and pig out on treats for the trail, they got to take off for the beach (which I was highly unprepared for--one pair of jeans and a long sleeve shirt for my baby boy to play at the beach in? Wow, i'm awesome...)

Then they found pretty flowers to pick in the mountains:

Shelby is just about the cutest thing ever. She kept saying the whole time we were gone. "Mama, Running, Dirt." This is her shortened sing-song version entitled "Mama, Running". I think it's coming out as a single on itunes in July.

We made it to the end hardly even out of breath, which may or may not be a good sign for a "race" but if the race was for who had the most fun, we totally totally totally won!

Post race awesomeness.

I am pretty sure I'm ready for a 30K!!! Woohoo!

Los Angeles Flower Market

If any of you saw that celebrity-filled obligatory go-see Valentines Day, you might remember seeing the Los Angeles Flower Market!

After deciding that I need to really start liking things about Los Angeles, I started putting together an LA Bucket list. Seth sent this as a suggestion this week, and I could hardly wait for the weekend! My good friend Emily came with me early early in the morning, and we adventured out to the wholesale shops. It's $1 to get in, and then you have access to the beautiful smells and sights of flowers and vases galore!

This little beauty of a plant was $2.50, and I just couldn't pass up the beautiful vase...Emily got a matchy-matchy one with me so we'll always remember our trip!
It really is a brilliant vase. I am in love with it. This picture does not do it justice!

Beautiful Gerber Daisies, and the lovely orchid! The pot for the Orchid is also a favorite!
And...these lovely tulips for $7.
We really needed some flowers to cheer up the house today! I think these were just the trick.

I wish I could send all these lovely bouquets to my friends, family, mothers, and mothers-in-law next week.

One little word 2011

I know it's not, like, January or anything, but I have been trying for the past four months to think of my one little word (reference origins: One Little word 2009), and it wasn't until General Conference that it came to me:

Purpose

I know that probably wasn't the theme of any talks, but as I took brief notes throughout the talks, that's the word that kept coming to my head (Along with Priority and Direction, the two close runners up for my word). And I'm SOOOOO excited that I finally found it. I have set a lot of goals and resolutions for 2011, but I wasn't sure where they were going until now. I would like to live my life with meaning, with a purpose, and give reason to the things I'm doing.

Meaning, I'm not just running several 1/2 marathons. I'm healing my soul and putting effort into something that I've found meaningful for my spirit and emotional well-being. I'm not just trying to eat and promote a healthier diet for us all, I'm setting patterns for our family and our futures. I'm not just learning how to bake and cook better, I'm gaining a valuable skill that I can put to use daily. And I'm not just studying my scriptures and earning my Honor Bee, I am seeking a greater relationship with my Heavenly Father. I'm working to become the woman I want to be, and to develop the family that we want to have!

I'm not sure that I can even come close to summing up my One Little word 2010. Balance. Oh, how I REALLY needed that word last year. Last year I wrote "Balance in life, balance with family, balance with church callings, balancing my emotions, balancing nutrition, health, and exercise with everything else I need to work on."

Oh, last January I was a mess, a hot mess! We're still so amazed, looking back, at how blessed we were with our circumstances (Seth being unemployed and studying for the bar AKA caring for his ailing wife and 3 month old son.) I feel so humbled by the circumstances we were in, and how much I learned. I was so embarrassed to have to rely on others so readily, but there was no getting around it, and I believe we learned balance in our little family as a result. (We also learned that we have angels all around us, helping in so many ways!) While some might argue that my emotions are always a little on the edge, they are in MUCH better control now than ever. Thank goodness.

I really think we ended up doing well with achieving a greater balance in our lives, and now I'm excited to move forward with purpose in this next year, finding a greater meaning in our lives as we structure it with (and on) PURPOSE :)

Just some thoughts

*When I'm cleaning up Ryan's toys at night, I'm a little obsessive about organizing everything and collecting "similar" toys and grouping them. My mom gave Ryan a cute sports bag with four mini balls (baseball, basketball, soccer ball, football). I'm always missing the basketball. And you know where it always is? In "Ryan's Garbage can" (AKA not really a garbage can, just a new garbage can that he uses to put things in). His bigger basketball is usually in there as well. I guess he likes to really play basketball! Guess we better get him a hoop at some point.

*I recently purchased Physique 57, and even though I've only done the complete workout 3x and the 1/2 hour express workout 1x, I am in. love. with. it. My legs are literally shaking like crazy half of the time, and yet I'm still motivated to keep going. I like the method and the way they integrate everything. Makes me feel like I'm working toward something real. It at least gets me by when I can't go running!

*Ryan gets so sad when little Julia (the baby girl I watch 3x a week) gets sad. When she wakes up from her nap and is fussing, he runs to her door and yells her name "Ju-weee-ah! Ju-wee-ah! Bay-Bee!" and knocks on her door till I come open it, and then he runs in and pats her hand with such concern. It. is. cute.

*I've been experimenting with different yogurts/granola/fruit combinations for breakfast, and I think I've finally settled on 3/4 plain greek 0%, 1/4 vanilla (TJs) nonfat, Ancient Grains granola (until I start making my own...I'll get there!), and either Strawberries, blueberries, bananas, or blackberries, or some combination of the above. Some days I put milk in, other days I do a "parfait". Until green smoothies hit me again, I'm loving this breakfast!

*I remember when I used to work full-time and get back to emails, stay up on facebook status updates, read every blog, and return phone calls on my commute. I also remember when I couldn't figure out why some people couldn't do it! Turns out....I don't sit at a desk the majority of the day, and I don't have a commute any more...so sometimes I fall behind on all these things. Luckily my smart phone helps me stay in the loop because I can catch up on it while I'm putting Ryan down, but one handed typing on a phone isn't always doable. I LOVE reading blogs, it's just hard to comment. It's really easy to LIKE a status, not always easy to make a comment. I text now and again, and that's certainly easier to get something quick across than trying to return a phone call! Sigh. I guess what I'm trying to say...is that I'm so sorry if I seem distant. I guess in a way, I am. Our little family is working to make some big life decisions this year--from jobs, to location, to finances, cars, and fashion(just kidding) (kind of). Sometimes I guess I'm lost in my own thoughts. I hope that comes across more "introspective phase" than "selfish phase".

*I think in the past three weeks I've had a massive paradigm shift. Things that used to bother me suddenly don't. And my foggy brain is starting to think through things better, easier, and more clearly. Phew! THAT only took 17 months! (errr....or 17 plus 9, maybe. I wasn't the best pregnant person, either). That might seem like a direct contradiction of previous bullet point. Um, so take what I just said with a grain of salt. ;)

*Ryan likes to play with a pile of rocks we have in a box on our porch. Every time he brings me a rock, and I say "ohhh pretty rock!" he starts "rocking out" and dancing. I love the connections their little brains make!

*This is random, but I just thought of it because Sokel just resigned. When I worked for a investment fund in Washington, DC, I was in my boss's office with my bestie Lauren. We were talking about rich financial gurus, and me, trying to sound smart said "Oh yeah, like that singer guy!" My boss was SO confused, and asked for clarification. I said "Yeah, you know, that singer guy...oh yeah. BUFFET!" ....Lauren paused and then inserted “You mean Warren Buffet?" Me: "YEAH, Warren Buffet! (pause) that's weird that he's a singer if he's so rich." Lauren: "Um, Jane...I think you mean Jimmy Buffet. Jimmy Buffet is the singer, Warren Buffet is the investor." a.w.k.w.a.r.d. Seth and I still laugh about it at least once a month.

*Ryan's little curlycue: (this picture is old, it's lots longer now! Also, Ryan needs a haircut...) * I am completely and 100% infatuated with Trader Joes. I get sad when I have to go to another grocery store. When we look for places to move, I look up where the closest Trader Joes is and center my housing search around where it is. It's a big deal. For one, they don't have any MSG or high fructose corn syrup in any of their products, so its worry-free and easy shopping. And then...the fresh taste! Can't beat it. I've come to realize that people either 1-love it 2-hate it or 3-haven't shopped there enough. ;) (and seriously, why the hate, people? I'd really like a logical response to this one!)

*And I'm loving these two cuties that like to sit on the chair to drink their milk together:

Seth's Birthday!

Ever since I've known Seth, he's been telling people that 33 is the perfect age. Well, pressure is on, buddy, you're 33!!! :) We're excited to make this Seth's perfect year!

Seth mentioned off-hand a few weeks ago when I was telling him about recipes I wanted to try from my BAKED explorations cookbook that the Caramel Apple cake sounded good, so I immediately started planning to make it for him for his big day. Maybe I started a blog for my baked goods (it's on the sidebar, and don't expect anything special, just a new years resolution and something I wanted to take a stab at....) and so I'll post some pictures of the cake on there!

I love this guy. We got to have a few celebrations for the week--Tuesday we went to dinner at Desert Rose with Jason and Elizabeth, and Wednesday we went to dinner at Umami Burger and then had a cake celebration with friends. Seth got some great presents and cards from family and friends, and Seth's coworkers went way out of their way to make the day special, including taking him to lunch and buying him his FAVORITE cake from the Hawaiian Bakery. Oh, and they gave him this balloon, which was popular with the under 18 month crowd in our house...

On a side note, Ryan has already caught the "Cheese" for the camera awkward picture taking bug. Every time we pulled out the camera he'd crawl up on the ottoman and do this exact pose, chin up and everything. Bless his heart.

Happy Birthday, Seth! And thanks to all our friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers who made Seth's day so great!!

I know it won't be cute for long...

But right now it's SO adorable to us! I love the way he puckers his lips up, just how I say no to him. Turns out every time I say no in my "stern" voice, he laughs his head off and does exactly what I say "no" to. Sigh.

Also, Seth has been sick for several days, and finally dragged himself out of bed, and cleaned the front room with Ryan while I was doing dishes. I walked out of the kitchen to find this:

So lovable. Both of them.

Also, random: Most the time when Ryan is watching his shows (Toy Story or Baby Signing Time) he pulls the keyboard up. Just in case...ya know.

What was that again?

The other day, Ryan kept repeating the same word OVER and OVER, and I had NO idea what it was. Finally I took this video, uploaded it, and sent it to Seth to see if he could figure it out.

We're still not positive what he was trying to say, so any guesses are welcome. We think it might have been "Lightyear" for Buzz Lightyear, since he is obsessed with Toy Story. It also could have been "Woody" for all we know. Seth thought it had something to do with food. Who knows, but this little boy will keep us guessing!

Too cute

Lately, Ryan likes sitting "In" things. The Bumbo, the box that our valentines came in, and his favorite...the laundry basket. He put all this stuff in here, and took a full 10 minutes getting in and sorting everything around, and then finally asked for my help. These are all his Crib toys.
Lately, Ryan thinks its all sorts of funny to put on his hat and put in the pacifier that he NEVER has used, and then cheese it for the camera to me. I'm watching the cutest little girl a few times a week, and since she's 5 months younger than Ryan, he thinks it's funny to do "baby" things. So NOW he'll drink out of a bottle? Whatever, dude.
Lately, Ryan wants to play grown-up dress up with any of our clothes he can find. I'll spare you the pictures of when he puts on my blouses.
And...lately and luckily we've had a champ of a sleeper (knock on wood). Maybe it's because we made his crib a little more comfortable, adding cotton blankets between the sheets and mattress and getting him his very own toddler crib pillow (Thank you Ikea!)
Lately, life is good.

Happy Valentines Day!

Happy Valentines Day!

I was all sorts of into celebrating V-day this year, so much so that I started crafting for the holiday in January. I couldn't wait to get our decorations together! We printed off the subway art from Eighteen25 and hung this cute thing by it. And you can see the flower I made below amongst the presents!

Ryan was pretty lucky to have generous grandparents who showered him with adorable presents, including Thomas the Talking Tank and The cutest talking Puppy you've ever seen!

In my family growing up, we always would "Fish for Presents" on Valentines day, so we're carrying on the tradition! It was so fun to fashion a fishing rod and let Ryan fish for his prizes (Seth and I got in on the action, too! We skyped with my parents so we could have an audience!) We were happy to have our little party a day early while Ryan was awake to enjoy it and Seth was home to be a part of it.

And thanks to Seth's fashion skills rubbing off on Ryan. He loves his new "Ha High" (Hat. He whispers it when he says it. Adorable.)

Seth works late most nights during the week so we celebrated Valentines day all weekend while he was home! Saturday afternoon we packed for just about anything, and then took off in the car, not knowing where we were going. We had several ideas, but couldn't figure out what felt right. Turns out we ended up in Ventura for a fun shopping trip to Target followed by a DELICIOUS dinner at Red Brick Pizza followed by a late-ish sunset on Ventura beach. It was so simple and so refreshing to get out of the city, enjoy the valley, and spend quality simple time together.

I'm pretty sure Ryan loved it.

Happy Valentines Day, Everyone! You. Are. Loved.
