I'm a REAL mom!

Today felt like a REAL day as a REAL mom.

This is a first.

Today I threw in a batch of Laundry
then I took Seth to the Library to study
and took Ryan to the Grocery Store--BY MYSELF!

We must have looked a little silly
with Ryan in the Snap-N-Go
a Basket FULL of groceries precariously hung on the handle
and a Basket full of groceries underneath the carseat in the cubby.
not to mention the gallon of milk and box of diapers in my hand...

I was lucky to get a parking spot in front of our apartment
so that I could get Ryan and the Groceries in without Ryan leaving my sight.
How does everyone else do these things alone??

I took Ryan in the Snap-N-Go around the corner to change the laundry
all the while talking to my Dad on the phone.
Ryan took a nap while I put the groceries away
and prepared dinner
and baked some cookies

Ryan woke up, and ate
and then I wore him (in the sling) while I made lunch for me
we even caught an episode of the Mentalist while I folded Laundry.

Then....I decided to take a shower.
Again, how do people DO these things while hubby is at work?
Ryan was perfect. He hung out in his swing seat and didn't make a peep.
he even let me blow dry AND straighten my hair before eating again.

So we finally ventured out again
and picked up Seth from the library
and brought him home to eat our dinner

Ryan slept through dinner before having his own
and then he was soooo tuckered out from our exciting day
that he fell asleep at 9:30. that's a few hours early!

So why do I tell you this, you might ask?

Well, because this isn't normal for us.
but I'd like to make it the new normal for us.

It feels so good to feel well enough to be a real mom and do real mom things with real mom energy and real mom independence.

This is simply so I can have a picture of my cute lil' guy on this post. Note the chubby thigh :)

We'll see if I can keep it up for tomorrow :)

Jane, I have no answers for you. I have no idea how people do it with one child, let alone more! :) I usually only have the energy for one outing a day if I am lucky. I did finally go to the grocery store by myself with James a couple weeks ago. I ended up putting his carseat in the grocery cart and he was an angel and the vibration of the cart rocked him to sleep. I don't quite have the hang of showering while he is awake yet, but most of the time if I put him in his bouncer chair and turn him toward a window he is good for at least long enough for me to take a quick shower. I keep having to remind myself that as much as I love holding him, it is okay for me to put him down and if he cries or fusses a little, that is okay, too!

I don't know how people do it either! I've almost sworn-off ever taking H. anywhere by myself. The two times we've been without Stephen, H. has had a complete break-down. Thank you very much--that's my baby!

Good job having such a great day! Hopefully there will be many more to come.

Yay! I'm glad that you're feeling better and were able to do so much with Ryan in tow :)

I remember the first day that I was a mom AND made cookies. It was awesome. Nine months of pregnancy meant nothing. Having a baby emerge from my womb meant nothing. Caring for an infant 24/7 meant nothing. I didn't feel like a mom until I did all those things AND made a batch of homemade cookies.

So I get this. I totally get this.

And one kid and 2 1/2 years later, those days happen more often but they're still rare.

Good for you, honey.

Wow! How great for you. It's such a nice feeling to be able to do all of those things with a new baby. It finally feels like normal life again! But don't expect too much of normal! :) How did the cookies turn out? Did they taste exactly like the store-bought ones???

i discovered the easiest way to grocery shop is to wear him in the bjorn so i have two hands free to push the cart (and his carseat isn't taking up the whole thing). as far as showering goes...when he was younger i would put him in his carseat or bumbo in the bathroom with me while i showered. for some reason the loud noise of the shower intrigued him or something and he didn't make a peep the whole time i was in there.

ps...i was going to give you a pep talk for crying it out since you said you were doing it. read all the comments from my post if you need extra pep talks. it is a few days of hell...but like everyone said it is totally worth it. beckham is now sleeping like a dream most of the time.

Wow Jane! Just reading about your day makes me tired. No wonder Ryan was so tuckered out! Way to go - juggling so much and still being sane at the end of the day!

Way to go, Jane! You're amazing.

I have no secret for balancing the day-to-day craziness of taking care of a baby and getting everything done. The one thing that I do know, though, is that laundry and cooking and cleaning can wait. The small moments with the baby pass, and then one day, our little boys will be grown and gone. I really have learned to cherish the small moments. Believe me, this is easier said than done for me. I used to be such a stickler about having to get things done and have the apartment looking perfect. It's taken (and is still taking) time for me to adjust to my new top priority, but it's getting easier.

I guess I find that as I put Miles first and take care of his needs, the laundry, cooking and cleaning get done. Line upon line, my friend.

You're an awesome mom, and I'm thrilled that your confidence in the motherhood balancing act is growing!

I love you! :)

Hooray for going out! When Mady was born I forced myself to get both girls out of the house a couple times before my mom left just so I knew I could do it! It is a huge accomplishment still! Congrats! Now you know you can too! I hate to say it, but your baby is not so little anymore! He looks like a little boy now! It's so darn sad. These big babies of ours just grow up too fast!

Drew and I were just talking about that this morning...what happens after he goes back to work, and I am by myself with the baby? I am glad to know that every day things are possible! :)
